Q: Airpod sound quality in google hangouts and Starcraft

So far my experience with Airpods has been mostly great. I love how easy it is to use them with my macbook. The sound is great when I'm listening to Spotify or iTunes. The bass is impressive for such small devices.

However I've noticed sound quality (and mic quality, I'm told) is significantly lower when I'm in a google hangout. There is an intermittent clicking sound, and voices sound muffled.

I noticed the same while playing Starcraft - the sound quality is even worse; it's super muffled, and sounds terrible. It sounds like an old mp3 that has a super low quality compression. I can't use Airpods for that game due to the bad quality.

Why would sound quality vary so much between applications? I suspect it's because the mic is being used. This isn't an issue with regular earbuds. I feel like it's a major handicap of using them. Is there a way to fix it?
